AUSTRALIA ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR HEAT VAPOR FACILITY

There also is $2 million to establish a vapour heat treatment plant for the Territory mango industry.

Harvested mangoes would be put through the plant to get rid of fruit fly before export overseas to China, Korea and Japan.

Currently, Territory mangoes are sent to Queensland for the treatment before being exported.

The announcement has come as a surprise to NT Mango Industry Association president Leo Skliros, who told ABC Rural he would like to see more detail.

"I know there's a facility in Cairns that was established quite a few years ago but hasn't had much use for the last few years,"he said.

"I just want to make sure the logistics behind a vapour heat treatment plant in Darwin have all been worked out and it's going to be used.

"We are at a fairly high-price end of the market, which usually prices out a lot of our fruit from export."
